The types and amounts of whales and other marine life you might see differs from one season to the next, but odds are you’ll get a glimpse of something no matter when you venture out.
Which is why last weekend we decided to take The Explorers on their first ocean adventure.

There was much excitement at the dock about all the pelicans

Lots & lots of hopeful staring out at the ocean

Mr. Cool (aka The Big Explorer) anxiously waiting for a blue whale sighting

Finally! Dolphins. Lots & lots of dolphins!

Did I mention how many dolphins we spotted?
Where we went: Newport Beach harbor
Length of tour: 2.5 hours
What we saw: Lots & lots of birds, sea lions and a ton of common dolphins (but no whales)
Lessons learned
- The only member of our family who gets sea sick is me.
- Choose a tour operator that provides on-board education/talks during the excursion.
- Dress in layers, bring hats & plenty of sunscreen.
- There's a lot for kids to enjoy on an ocean excursion even if the whales don't make a guest appearance.

something I've been wanting to try too! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteIt took me until my youngest was 4 to try because I was worried the kids would get sea sick or go stir crazy on a boat for 2.5 hours. Thankfully, they really enjoyed it - even though we didn't see any whales. I think your girls would love it, too Abbey! :-)
DeleteWoah! This is right where I grew up! You will have to bring your crew out to the San Juans so they can see the resident orcas that live here. They are something to see. :) The bottom line is that any day on the water is a good one!
ReplyDeleteYes! That's on our bucket list! Hope to get to it in the next couple of years. Now that we know the kids do fine on the water, we're ready! :-)
DeleteWhat a great and fun family adventure! We haven't done this yet and I've always wanted to go during the migration season. We were just in Newport last month to go to Catalina. My son got seasick so I've been hesitant about the little boats too. Sorry you got sick :( I'd take lots of dolphins out in the water any day too.
ReplyDeleteBeing sea sick is just no fun! I've tried various remedies, but none are 100% effective. But I'm willing to brave it (especially in good weather) to see all that's out there. :-)
